Moreover, the workshop includes an inspirational example of EU projects’ collaboration on the field of cultural heritage. In particular, a session is devoted to the cooperation built among the projects Interreg Europe CHERISH and HORIZON2020 project PERICLES on preserving the endangered lagoon fishing traditions and local knowledge in the Natura 2000 Nestos delta. The two projects combined their forces in showcasing the heritage value that the fishing communities bear as well as the local knowledge they transfer generation to generation. Researching on the four lagoon-fishing areas that are located on the Nestos river delta, they focus their interest in analyzing the communally-led way that the fishermen associations operate. This practice has its roots the Byzantine era. The fishermen share their jointly earned profits equally instead of competing for the catches. Nowadays the lagoon fishing tradition is becoming endangered. Many lagoons are now hired to private companies, and only two areas (Vistonis & Nestos lagoons) are still managed traditionally. The Nestos delta has a Natura 2000 and Ramsar designation, and it is included in the National Park of East Macedonia & Thrace underlying the importance that the lagoon environmentally friendly operation has for the area. The teams of both projects work closely to raise awareness about the significance of the intangible heritage involved in this traditional type of fishing as well as support the local fishing economy.
